DNA sequencing in genetic research. Capillary electrophoresis (CE) equipment being used to sequence DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). DNA sequencing determines the exact order of the four bases that make up a gene. Genes are regions of DNA that encode how every cell in the body works. Here, the DNA is cut into fragments and each base is labelled so that a detector can distinguish them. This method makes it possible to compare normal and abnormal versions of the same gene, which could reveal the exact cause of a genetic disease.
