Bacterial colony study. Gloved hands marking radioactively-tagged bacterial colonies on an autoradiograph for the human genome project. Known human DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) sequences with radioactive markers were introduced into colonies with unknown sequences present. Those the marker bound to formed a dark dot on the film, giving clues to the unknown fragments' sequences. The human genome project aims to find the DNA base sequences of all human genes, strands of DNA which perform specific tasks. This will allow for improved drug design and a greater understanding of genetic diseases. Photographed at the Sanger Centre in Cambridge,England | |
