Human genome research. Gloved hands holding a tray containing part of the human genome. The 384 wells each hold a different fragment of cloned DNA. It takes 60 of these trays (23,040 wells) to hold the entire human genome. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the substance which controls every character- istic of an organism. It is made up of two chains linked by bases. Specific sequences of bases (genes) perform a specific task within the living organism. The human genome project aims to find the base sequence of all the genes in human DNA,allowing for improved drug design and a greater understanding of genetic diseases.
