DNA gel analysis. Researcher examines an agarose gel containing DNA fragments using Ultra-Violet (UV) light. The DNA fragments have been stained with ethidium bromide and are seen as fluorescent violet bands on the gel (at lower centre). The researcher is wearing a mask to protect his face from the UV light and gloves to protect his hands from the highly carcinogenic ethidium bromide. Agarose gels are a routine way in which fragments of DNA are separated by size. Samples containing various sized fragments are separated within a gel using an electric current. Such techniques are used during DNA fingerprint analysis and when isolating particular genes | |
