Gene therapy research on AIDS. Professor Bernard Ehresmann holds up an autoradiogram film during gene therapy research on HIV (Human Immuno- deficiency Virus). HIV is the virus which causes AIDS. Here, part of the "genetic fingerprint" of the virus is being analysed; black bands represent the sequence of base pairs of the viral genetic code. This genetic sequence enables the virus to reproduce itself. Ehresmann is examining the code for the nucleocapsid (NC) protein coat of the virus. This NC coat may be the site in which gene therapy could prevent the virus from replicating. Photographed at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (CNRS) in Strasbourg,France | |
