Roman aqueduct,Pont du Gard, across the River Gard near Nimes,France. The Pont du Gard is 275 metres long and 49 metres high. It was built between the years 15BC and 14AD by the Romans. The whole aqueduct was 50 kilometres long and supplied Nimes with water. The water channel is on the top of the structure. On top of the first level of arches is a bridge, which was widened in the 18th century. Projecting blocks are seen on the pillars between the middle layer of arches. These blocks supported scaffolding during the construction of the aqueduct. It was built from dressed stone without mortar. The Pont du Gard is a World Heritage Site | |
