Stone Age tomb. Interior of the neolithic (New Stone Age) tomb of Maeshowe. This dates from about 2700 BC,and is found in the Orkney Islands to the north of Scotland. There are several such cairns on the islands, but Maeshowe is the largest. This interior is covered by a grassy mound that is some 37 metres wide and 7 metres high. This is the main central chamber of the tomb, accessed through an 11-metre-long tunnel (not seen). The chamber is 4.7 metres square. There are three small alcoves in the walls of the chamber, two of which are seen here (bottom left and straight ahead). Fragments of bone were found in these chambers when the tomb was originally excavated in 1861 | |
