Column at Carthage on the shore of the Bay of Tunis. Carthage was founded in 800 BC by the Tyrians from Phoenicia and grew into a metropolis of a maritime empire. It was destroyed by the Romans in 146 BC who had laid siege to the city for three years. It was easy to prevent access by land because the city was built on a promontory jutting into the Gulf or Bay of Tunis, and access by sea was prevented by walling up the harbour. One column remains standing, although the capitals (upper sections) of other columns are on the ground | |
