Roman amphitheatre at El Djem in Tunisia. Tiers of seating surround the arena,with supports for upper levels of seating in the background,rising 36 metres above ground. Spectacles of gladiators fighting against each other and against wild animals were staged here. It is the third largest amphitheatre of the Roman world,having a capacity of between 30,000 and 45,000 people. It was built in the second century AD.
