Great Wall of China. View along a restored section of the Great Wall of China. This is a defensive, fortified wall stretching from West Gansu to the Gulf of Liaodong,a distance of 2250 km,although there is evidence that it was once somewhat longer. Construction of the wall was started under the Qin dynasty (c. 214 BC) to prevent incursions by Mongolian and Turkish invaders. Substantial rebuilding and fortification was carried out during the early Ming dynasty (15th Century). Most of the wall is about 8 metres high and made of brick-faced earth and stone | |
