Modelling Klaus Stortebeker. Reconstruction of the face and head of the pirate Klaus Stortebeker (1360-1401). The model has been constructed by the sculptor Elisabeth Daynes from his skull,which was found in 1878. Stortebeker was the leader of the Victual Brothers (a companionship of privateers),who later turned to piracy. In 1401,his ship was captured by a Hamburgian fleet and he,and all 73 of his crew,were sentenced to death. Legend has it that at the execution Stortebeker asked the mayor to release as many men as he could walk past once beheaded. Apparently it was 12,but they were nonetheless executed.
