Statue of the Lady of Brassempouy. Large replica of the Lady of Brassempouy,a 3.5 cm tall figurine that was discovered in 1894 at the excavation site of Brassempouy in Landes,south-west France. Sculpted from a mammoth's ivory tusk, the original figurine dates back to the Upper Palaeolithic era (old stone age),and is probably around 23,000 years old. It is consequently one of the earliest examples of prehistoric art that accurately depicts a subject's facial features. Photographed at Brassempouy,Landes,France | |
