Skeleton of the Kennewick man, discovered accidentally on 28th July 1996,on the bank of the Columbia river (near Kennewick,Washington State). His Caucasian features indicated that he was a recent European pioneer, but a projectile in his side suggested he predated the arrival of the Europeans to the New World. As the area was part of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, the Native American tribe therefore fought for the remains to be buried according to traditional religious beliefs, but the scientific community eventually won. The skeleton was indeed found to be around 9,300 years old, making it one of the oldest skeletons to be found in North America, and of great interest in the understanding of migrations to the New World |
