Roman fresco. Scalpel being used by a restorer working on a Roman fresco. The fresco, covered by centuries of dirt, shows a female figure. The fresco is part of a Roman burial site known as a columbarium,a place with niches (two either side of the fresco) for the placement of urns containing the ashes of cremated bodies. This columbarium was discovered at the Monte di Procida archaeological site, which is on the island of Procida, near Naples,Italy. The area around Naples was conquered by the Romans in the 4th century BC,and the Roman period came to an end there in the 5th century AD | |
