Stone Age furniture. Display cabinet inside one of the houses of the neolithic (New Stone Age) settlement at Skara Brae, located in the Orkney Islands to the north of Scotland. The settlement was inhabited between 3200 and 2200 BC. There are eight houses in total. The settlement is thought to have been abandoned, and later covered by sand dunes. This sand preserved the stone houses for over 4000 years until a storm in 1850 stripped the grass from the mounds. Every house consisted of a main chamber with one of these structures opposite the doorway, illuminated by a fire in the centre of the room. It is thought that it was used as a storage or display cabinet for status symbols | |
