Fluoride pollution monitoring equipment. Solar- powered equipment (pole at upper right) monitoring atmospheric fluoride pollution in a vineyard. This pollution was produced by brick-firing kilns. The emissions have been reduced to acceptable levels and monitoring continues. Fluorides contain the reactive and toxic element fluorine. The biggest concern over fluoride pollution is the potential for fluorides to enter the food chain and build-up to dangerous levels in livestock and plants. Although fluorides in water mostly end up in teeth and bones, atmospheric fluoride emissions can cause severe respiratory distress. Photographed in Swan Valley, near Perth,Western Australia | |
