Soot identification for pollution control. High- resolution transmission electron micrograph (HRTEM) of a particle of soot from wood or coal burning (left) with its derived 'signature'. The HRTEM shows the structure of the soot particle. Image analysis produces the signature (right),from which are derived details of the structure such as graphite lattice spacing in the particle. Smaller spacings tend to indicate that the soot originated in a diesel engine, larger spacings (as here) tend to arise from wood or coal burning. Signatures could be used to identify sources of soot pollution. HRTEM magnification: x2.5 million | |
