Effects of deforestation aggravated by acid rain, precipitation with a low pH level produced through the reactions between atmospheric water and manmade pollutants (sulphur dioxide & oxides of nitrogen released by the burning of fossil fuels). Here,in Queenstown in south-west Tasmania, the pollutants are as a consequence of nearby copper mining and smelting operations. Any regrowth is hampered because, without the overhead protection of a canopy of trees, the top soil is vulnerable to erosion. The impact of acidification on soils, plant & animal life and bodies of water is of growing concern | |
