Alkalized soil. Excessive use of fertilisers has produced an overly alkaline (alkalized) soil in these agricultural fields. The alkaline solids of the fertilisers and other salts have been brought to the surface (forming a white crust) because the fields have been flooded by irrigation. This white crust is toxic to most plants, rendering the land unusable. Photographed in Alberta,Canada | |
