Asphalt lake. Worker holding a stick coated in melting asphalt, recovered from the lake he is standing on. This lake is below sea level and fills with water. The water is pumped out, allowing the asphalt to harden and be recovered. It is then taken to a plant for processing. Sir Walter Raleigh is credited with discovering this lake in 1595,which is the largest deposit of asphalt in the world. It covers a surface area of approximately 360,000 square metres. Asphalt is a semi-solid substance composed of bitumen and other inert mineral matter. It is mixed with gravel and used in road-surfacing and roofing materials. Photographed at La Brea,Trinidad | |
