Noumea,New Caledonia, seen from the International Space Station (ISS). The city sprawls over this peninsula that juts into a lagoon. The island is in the southern tropics of the Pacific Ocean, and so coral reefs (light blue, top centre) can form. Mountains (lower right) rise behind the city. They cover most of the island, and they are among the world's major sources of nickel and chromium. New Caledonia is an overseas territory of France. The 1989 population of Noumea, its capital city, was 65,110. This area is about 50 kilometres wide. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 380 kilometres.
