Seattle and Vancouver,US-Canada border, seen from the International Space Station (ISS). North is at top. Some 5 million people live here, most in the 2 main Pacific coast cities (brown). Seattle,USA (centre) is 200 kilometres from Vancouver,Canada, seen at right of Vancouver Island (top left). The surrounding land is dominated by the snow-capped (white) mountains of the Cascade Range. These cause rain to fall and support forests (green) at left, while the land (brown) at right gets little rain. Logging in the forests forms a checkerboard pattern, best seen in the snow at lower right. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 380 kilometres. Photographed on 29 April 2002 | |
