Smoke plumes over Baghdad,Iraq,on 31 March 2003,visible and infrared satellite image. North is at top. Vegetation is red and urban areas are grey. The smoke plumes (black) originate from the burning of pools of oil set alight to provide a smokescreen against aerial attacks. Baghdad is the capital city of Iraq, and stands on the River Tigris (blue),which flows from upper left to lower right. This area is 44 by 46 kilometres in size. Baghdad suffered a severe bombardment when it was invaded by USA/UK-led forces in spring 2003.
