Photograph of Trichogramma evanescens,a tiny female chalcid wasp, laying her eggs in those of the cabbage moth,Mamestra brassicae. The female pierces the egg of the cabbage moth, depositing her brood, the larvae feed on and destroy the host egg. Cabbage moths lay their eggs in the cabbage plant foliage. Once hatched the larvae feed destructively on the leaves & heart of the crop. The parasitizing habits of Trichogramma have been employed in biological pest control experiments & the wasps reared commercially in the USA to eliminate specific crop pests. This species,T. evanescens has been used in China to control crop pests | |
