Collecting titan arum pollen. Botanist collecting pollen from a titan arum lily (Amorphophallus titanum) flower. The pollen is contained in the large sheath,or spadix. The titan arum is one of the world's largest flowers. It flowers only rarely,so when it does the pollen is collected so that it may be used to pollinate other titan arums when they flower. The flower smells of rotting meat to attract flies, the natural pollinators of the plant. Photographed at Cambridge University Botanic Garden in early September 2004 | |
