Ginseng cultivation. Rows of ginseng plants (Panax sp.) being grown underneath black mesh. Ginseng is grown for its root, which is used in a variety of herbal therapies,as a stimulant, panacea (general remedy),and as a supposed aphrodisiac. In the wild, ginseng grows in shady forests in its native China. The plastic netting above the rows is designed to imitate the patterns of shadow found in such forests, while still allowing the movement of air to prevent frosts or overheating; it may thus be viewed as a partial greenhouse.
