Grass-fed cows. Herd of cows fed exclusively on grass and so free of "mad cow disease" or Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE). BSE is a disease which was originally caused when cattle were fed the remains of sheep infected with scrapie. The virus-like prion that causes scrapie and BSE is also thought to cause Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans. Sheep remains had been added to cattle feed so that the protein within them would increase the cows' growth rate and make them ready for slaughter sooner | |
