Free range farming; young pigs (Sus scrofa domestica) foraging at the edge of a field. Pigs are often intensively reared in tiny, indoor pens. In free range farming, however, they are allowed to roam freely in a healthier, more natural environment. Pigs are omnivorous, feeding on most types of plant and animal matter. The farming of domesticated pigs was practised in China at least 9000 years ago and was a common feature of ancient Greek and Roman agriculture. Numerous breeds, which evolved over the centuries, have all but disappeared in recent times with the development of intensive rearing systems. Photographed in Norfolk,England | |
