Clear-cut forestry. Tree stumps in a clear-cut area of conifer forest. In the background are uncut conifer trees. Clear-cut forestry involves cutting down every tree within a given region, rather than selecting only the largest. Despite its apparent barbarity, this method allows the soil to recover faster, and allows more rapid re- planting of the forest. Carefully planned commercial logging has even increased the total forest cover in the northern hemisphere. However, replanting with single species (monocultures) has led to criticism over lack of concern for ecological diversity. Photographed in Kielder Forest,Northumberland,UK | |
