Hadrian's Wall and Cawfields Milecastle, aerial photograph. This view looks west from Cawfield's Milecastle, lower right. This part of Hadrian's Wall was built along the Great Whin Sill,an intrusion of volcanic rock running across Northumberland. This escarpment provided a natural defence against intrusions from the north. Milecastles were small forts built at regular intervals of one Roman mile along the entire length of Hadrian's Wall. These were built on the south side of the wall and housed troops who patrolled and maintained the wall and checked the passage of people passing the frontier.
