Hadrian's Wall and Cawfields Milecastle, aerial photograph. Milecastles were small forts built at regular intervals of one Roman mile along the entire length of Hadrian's Wall. These were built on the south side of the wall and housed troops who patrolled and maintained the wall and checked the passage of people passing the frontier. The steep slope on the north side of the wall acted as a natural vallam (rampart). Photographed near Haltwhistle,Northumberland,UK | |
