Hadrian's Wall in summer. Image 2 of 2. Sheep are grazing on the grass of Northumberland National Park,England,on a summer's day. Hadrian's Wall recedes into the distance (upper left). This view looks eastward from Cuddy's Crag, near Housesteads Roman Fort. This central part of the wall is built on part of the Whin Sill,a protruding mass of quartz-type rock stretching 125 kilometres across the northern part of England to form a natural defensive feature. In 122 AD the Roman Emperor Hadrian ordered the building of this 118- kilometre-long wall to defend Roman Britain from the Picts to the north. For this scene in winter, see image E755/019 | |
