Peat extraction. Aerial photograph of excavated land in a peat mire at Bolton Fell. Bolton Fell is among the ten largest lowland raised peat bogs in the UK. Lowland raised peat bogs support a wide range of rare birds, plants and insects. Because of the spread of agriculture and the commercial extraction of peat for the horticulture industry, they are the most threatened habitat in Europe. Despite being designated an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) commercial extraction of peat continues throughout most of the site. Photographed in Cumbria,UK | |
