Kamchatka Peninsula in winter,3D computer artwork, viewed at an altitude of 329 kilometres. The Kamchatka Peninsula lies in the far eastern part of Russia. At the southern end (above centre) begins the chain of the Kuril Islands that reaches until Japan and separates the Sea of Okhotsk (right) from the Pacific Ocean. This image was created by Christoph Hormann using data obtained from satellites such as Landsat and SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission). The data was processed into computer models using three-dimensional rendering software and then coloured and distorted to mimic the natural curvature of the Earth | |
