Shoemaker meteorite impact crater, satellite image. Around 1.6 billion years ago a meteorite impacted the Earth forming this 30 kilometre diameter crater, the oldest impact site in Australia. Prior to the death of geologist Gene Shoemaker in 1997,it was known as the Teague Ring. Yellow and white lakes can be seen in and around the crater. These colours come from the presence of sulphur and salt respectively | |
