Siberian steppes,Russia, seen from the International Space Station (ISS). North is at top. The dark green lines running from lower left to upper right are hundreds of kilometres long and visible from orbit. They show where snow (white) has fallen from trees (green) found in the valleys of a gently folded plain. The higher elevations do not have trees and are covered in snow. This plain lies between the River Ob (at right) and the River Irtysh (off left, not seen). The city of Barnaul (dark patch, far right,on a bend of the River Ob) is a major Siberian city of over 0.5 million. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 380 kilometres.
