Drying desert river. Aerial view of a drying river amongst giant sand dunes in the Namib desert. A large amount of salty residue can be seen at lower right (white),left after the river water evaporated. The river only survives in the deeper pools. Temporary rivers such as this occur only after a particularly wet rainy season, maybe as rarely as once a decade. The sand dunes in this region of the Namib desert can reach up to 350 metres in height, making them the largest in the world. Photographed at Sossusvlei,Namibia | |
