Salt pans,San Francisco,USA,seen from the International Space Station (ISS). North is at top. The salt pans are the bright red, green and orange areas. Water flowing from rivers (main one at right),enters San Francisco Bay (grey, lower left). Shallow pools were constructed into which the water was diverted and allowed to evaporate to obtain mineral salts. These minerals produce the bright colours seen. There are plans to redevelop the salt pans to restore them to the wetlands that once covered much of the bay's shores. This area, near Fremont,is about 10 kilometres wide. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 380 kilometres. Photographed on 30 June 2003 | |
