Peat bog. A waterlogged peat bog in a volcanic crater. Peat is formed by incomplete decomposition of plant remains in cool, wet environments such as rainy hilltops. The water in the ground prevents oxygen penetrating below the surface, leading to anaerobic decomposition and build up of acid. The acid prevents further decay and can preserve organic matter for thousands of years. A number of ancient corpses have been found in peat bogs, such as Lindow man (found in Cheshire,UK,in 1984),who was murdered and buried naked in about 500 BC. Peat is the first stage in the formation of coal. Photographed at Rano Kau volcano,Easter Island | |
