The Great Salt Lake,Utah, seen from space. In this south-westward view, the lake is in the foreground, and appears to be split into two halves. This is due to the rockfill causeway traversing the lake, which prevents any large- scale circulation of water. The lake is fed from a river to the left,so water in the left half is relatively fresh. The right half receives no fresh water, the high salt concentration giving it a pale blue colour. Beyond the lake is the 200 kilometer long Great Salt Lake Desert, including the Bonneville Salt Flats (near top centre).
