Stalactites hanging from the roof of a limestone cave. Limestone is a sedimentary rock made up mostly of the mineral calcium carbonate. This mineral is slowly dissolved and eroded by water seeping through the rock. As the water drips down from the roof of the cave, some of the dissolved calcium carbonate is deposited to form these icicle-like structures, called stalactites. Large stalactites can take hundreds of years to form. Photographed in the Kelly Hills Caves,Kangaroo Island,Australia | |
