Mud volcano at a geothermal spring. This miniature mud volcano has formed from bubbling hot mud which flows down its sides like lava. Mud pools at a spring like this are generally found in areas where the earth's crust is thin, allowing internal heat to escape to the surface. This internal heat comes from the decay of radioactive elements, chemical changes occurring under great pressure, and geological movements. Photographed on North Island,New Zealand | |
