Hot mud flow at a geothermal spring. This miniature flow of boiling mud mimics pahoehoe lava on a 'mud volcano'. Here mud has been heated whilst underground creating a raised structure that resembles a small volcano. Mud pools like this are generally found in areas where the earth's crust is thin, allowing internal heat to escape to the surface. This internal heat comes from the decay of radioactive elements, chemical changes occurring under great pressure, and geological movements. Photographed on North Island,New Zealand | |
