Boiling mud pools at a geothermal spring. The water and mud has been heated whilst underground by hot rocks causing steam to rise off it. Mud pools like this are generally found in areas where the earth's crust is thin, allowing internal heat to escape to the surface. This internal heat comes from the decay of radioactive elements, chemical changes occurring under great pressure, and geological movements. Photographed on North Island,New Zealand | |
