Hot spring. Steam rises from a hot pool at the Orakei Korako geothermal area. Pools in this area are known as the Artist's Palette pools for the colours of deposited minerals. These colours come from heavy concentrations of dissolved minerals in the water. The water has been heated under- ground by hot rocks. Geothermal springs are generally found in areas where the earth's crust is thin, allowing our planet's internal heat to escape. This internal heat comes from the decay of radioactive elements. The Artist's Palette series of pools were formed 10-16,000 years ago. Photographed on North Island,New Zealand | |
