Piz Bernina peak (upper centre),the highest point of the eastern Alps. At 4049 metres high it is the easternmost Alpine peak to clear 4000 metres. The valley in the foreground is Roseg valley. This used to contain two glaciers, the Roseg and the Tschierva. Warming of the climate in the last few decades has caused the retreat of these glaciers. Piz Bernina's peak is in Grisons,Switzerland, although some of the massif on which the peak is located straddles the Swiss-Italian border | |
