Cairn Gorm mountain. This view is from the south- west, near Stag Rocks, across Coire Raibert. This peak is part of the Cairngorm massif,a range of mountains which comprise the largest area of land above 900m in the UK. The massif is mostly underlain by Caingorm granite which, about 425 million years ago, formed when molten magma was injected into overlying metamorphosed sedimentary rock. The massif developed because the granite eroded more slowly than the surrounding metamorphic rock. The domed shape of the peak is due to the type of jointing of the rock.
