Beehive rock towers. Aerial view of beehive rock formations produced by water erosion. These sandstone towers are very fragile. Erosion occurs when water flows between the towers, deepening the channels between them and producing the unusual beehive shape. The coloured bands of rock differ in their permeability to water. The black bands allow water through and become coloured by dark patches of algae. The orange bands are less permeable and are stained with iron.
