San rock art depicting reedbuck (Redunca sp.). The San people (also known as Bushmen) who painted these pictographs once inhabited all of southern Africa. They were displaced by the Bantu people into the deserts and high mountain country. European settlers, arriving in the interior from the coast of southern Africa, drove the mountain San to extinction by the start of the twentieth century. Thousands of examples of rock art date from the last 800 years. Photographed in Battle Cave,Injisuthi,South Africa | |
