Native American art. View of pictographs on the wall of a canyon. These pictographs are thought to have been made by Anasazi, the Navajo term for early native inhabitants of the Colorado Plateau over 1000 years ago. As no direct descent from Anasazi to modern Native American tribes has been found, the pictographs are difficult to interpret, but probably depict the spirits of tribal leaders and holy men. Pictographs are made by the application of mineral pigments to a stone face, either by scraping the mineral across the stone or by painting with crushed mineral mixed with oil.
